Mount Everest is the highest mountain on earth and of course one of the most difficult to summit. In Nepal it is called Sagarmatha (goddess of the sky), the Tibetans know it under the name Chomolungma (mother goddess of the universe) and the same name is written Qomolangma in Chinese. Situated on the border between Nepal and Tibet it crowns the big High Asian mountain complex, where all of the worlds 14 8000 meter peaks are found. The mountain was first officially scaled in May 29,1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary, NZ and Tenzing Norgay, an Indian Sherpa from Darjeeling. Their summit followed several summit attempts by British and Swiss expeditions of which the Mallory and Irvine Expedition in 1924 is the most renowned and still a matter of discussion. Did they or did they not reach the summit 29 years before Hillary and Tenzing? Mount Everest is usually climbed with oxygen support, many talk about climbing without oxygen, yet few actually do it. Even the sherpas will normally use oxygen. The firsts to make it to the top without oxygen support were South Tirolean Reinhold Messner and Austrian Peter Habeler in 1978 via south Col and the South East Ridge. Messner also made it solo two years later. His achievement is considered one of the greatest in the mountaineering history. Climbing Everest is a dream to people around the world, visit www.mounteverest.net and learn how to do it. |
